Toshogu Shrine in Nikko typically charges around 1,300 yen for combined entry to the main hall, Yomeimon gate, sleeping cat carving and Ieyasu Tokugawa mausoleum. The 1617 founding shrine houses dozens of buildings designated National Treasures within the Shrines and Temples of Nikko UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1999. Rinnoji Sanbutsudo and Futarasan jinja round out the heritage cluster for combined ticket holders.
Tobu Limited Express Access
The Tobu Limited Express SPACIA from Asakusa runs to Tobu-Nikko in roughly 1 hour 50 minutes with reserved seat fares around 2,860 yen one way. JR Pass holders cannot use the Tobu network and must instead take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya plus the JR Nikko line, a total of around 2 hours 30 minutes. The Tobu line stops at the historic Tobu-Nikko station a short walk from the Shimo-Imaichi-machi shopping street.
Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji
Kegon-no-taki plunges roughly 97 metres at the outflow of Lake Chuzenji. The observation elevator descends to the basin viewing platform for around 570 yen, typically operating in the daytime from spring through late autumn. Tobu Bus Nikko service from JR Nikko station climbs more than 1,200 metres via the hairpin bends of the Irohazaka switchback road in roughly 50 minutes for around 1,250 yen one way to Lake Chuzenji.
Seasonal Considerations
Late October through early November draws peak autumn foliage crowds, with bus services running at high frequency to absorb day-trip demand. Winter from December through March sees the Yumoto onsen ryokan cluster on Lake Yunoko host snow-and-onsen package travellers. The Toshogu spring festival on 17-18 May features the 1,000 samurai procession, a 1,000-strong reenactment of Ieyasu’s funeral cortege.
