Matsushima Bay scatters approximately 260 pine-clad islets across the inlet east of Sendai, ranked among the Three Great Views of Japan since the 1689 codification by Confucian scholar Hayashi Shunsai. Cruise lines depart from the Matsushima Kaigan ferry terminal at regular intervals through the day, with adult tickets at around 1,500 yen for the standard hour-long loop.
Zuiganji Temple Complex
Zuiganji, the principal Zen temple of the Date clan, charges around 700 yen for adult entry. The current main hall dates from 1609 under Date Masamune’s reconstruction, fronted by the cedar-lined avenue running roughly 500 metres from the Matsushima Kaigan waterfront. Cave-cut Buddhist niches on the temple’s southern approach hold votive carvings from the Muromachi period. Visitor hours typically run daytime from spring opening through the late September window.
JR Senseki Line from Sendai
The JR Senseki Line runs from Aobadori station next to Sendai station to Matsushima Kaigan in roughly 40 minutes for around 420 yen. Trains depart at regular intervals through the day with the Senseki-Tohoku rapid service trimming the journey for those continuing on to Ishinomaki. The Matsushima Kaigan station sits a short walk from the cruise terminal and 10 minutes from Zuiganji’s southern entry gate.
Godaido and Fukuurabashi Bridge
Godaido temple sits on a small islet connected by a red wooden bridge directly facing Matsushima Kaigan station, with periodic openings on a roughly 33-year cycle for the public viewing of inner sanctuary statuary. The Fukuurabashi pedestrian bridge to Fukuura Island typically clears around 200 yen for the toll, granting access to the botanical garden trail covering hectares with hundreds of species native to coastal northern Tohoku.
