Documentation Checklist for Schengen and Japan

Schengen visitors entering Japan need a passport valid for the duration of intended stay, with at least one blank page for the entry stamp. The 90-day visa exemption applies to a broad list of nationalities including all EU member states under the bilateral agreement framework, refreshed against the 180-day Schengen calculation that limits total Schengen presence to 90 days within any rolling 180-day window per EU Regulation 2018/1806.

JESTA Pre-Travel Authorisation From 2026

Japan’s Electronic System for Travel Authorisation rollout under the immigration ministry’s announcement plans phased introduction during 2026 for visa-exempt nationalities. The cost is expected to be around 1,200 yen, valid for multi-year multiple entries within the 90-day per visit window. Application via the JESTA portal will require passport machine-readable zone data, traveller email and accommodation address. The system mirrors the US ESTA and forthcoming EU ETIAS frameworks.

Onward Ticket and Address Documentation

Japanese immigration officers may request proof of onward travel within the 90-day window and accommodation confirmation. Hotel booking confirmations from Booking.com, Rakuten Travel or direct ryokan reservations typically suffice. Cash-equivalent funds of roughly 5,000-10,000 yen per day of intended stay can be requested though not always checked. The short-term landing permit option for cruise passengers under MICE-visiting categories does not extend to leisure travel.

Return to Schengen Considerations

Travellers from a 21-day Japan trip returning to a Schengen state must have at least 21 days unused from their rolling 90-day Schengen allowance for re-entry without new visa. The Schengen Calculator at home-affairs.ec.europa.eu provides the day count. ETIAS from 2026 will require non-EU nationals to obtain travel authorisation costing around 7 EUR for multi-year validity, paid in advance with the application submitted via the official ETIAS website.
